Some of the names were also changed. Lord and Lady Montague and Lord and Lady Capulet were given first names (as opposed to the Shakespeare original where their first names are never mentioned), Friar Lawrence became Father Lawrence, and Prince Escalus was renamed Captain Prince. There was also no Friar John, who was in the original play. Also, some characters were switched from one family to the other - in the original, Gregory and Sampson are Capulet, but in the film, they are Montagues. (Abra and Petruchio, conversely, are shifted from the Montague to the Capulet family.)

Romeo + Juliet is a 1996 romantic and love film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare's play. While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring business empires and swords are replaced by guns (with brand names such as "Dagger" and "Sword").

Romeo and Julie Being the most financially successful film of a Shakespeare play during that time, it was popular among teenagers partly because the film used actors who were close to the age of the characters from the original play for the first time. Several critics also welcomed the film enthusiastically.

After wrangling an Oscar nomination for her feature-film debut in 2010's True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld took on the female lead in this retelling of Shakespeare's famed romance, which was shot in Italy and adapted for the big screen by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
